Oliver Jackson - Private Tutor in Central London
I recently completed my Natural Sciences degree at Christ's College Cambridge, where for my first two years I read maths, physics, and chemistry. In my final year I received the second highest First in the university in history and philosophy of science. Before Cambridge I went to Oundle School, a private boarding school in Northamptonshire.
After a stint working at the Cabinet Office I am now a studying for my Graduate Diploma in Law. My timetable is flexible and essentially self-managed, giving me lots of time to tutor outside of my legal studies.
I started tutoring my friends and peers while at school and have now been tutoring for around 7 years. In that time I have mostly taught maths, english, physics, chemistry and history at GCSE and A level, but have recently begun more intensive tutoring for the UK's 11+ and 13+ exams.
Subjects I Teach
My Education & Qualifications
University of Cambridge, 2012 – 2015
Natural Sciences (BA): 1st
School: Oundle School
One of the top private boarding schools in the country. I won the school's top academic scholarship for the 13+ and achieved 11*s at GCSE. I then studied A level Mathematics (A*), Further Mathematics (A*), History (A), Chemistry (A*) and Pre-U Physics (Distinction 1 - better than an A* at A level).
My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
I regularly tutored on all subjects to peers at school. One of my proudest moments was raising a friend's GCSE maths results from a C to and A in 6 weeks through intensive tutoring sessions outside of lessons. Once at university I advised students on history and philosophy of science (HPS), mentoring them through one-on-one library tutoring sessions. One tutee switched subjects to full HPS as a result of my tutoring, later receiving a First in the subject.
I also advised family and friends on their Oxbridge applications, running mock interview sessions and giving dedicated interview technique lessons.
Since graduating, I have been tutoring in and around London. I have tutored clients for the Westminster, St Paul's Girls, Godolphin and Latymer, Dulwich, Habs, Highgate, UCS and Stowe entrance exams, and went and lived with one client for three weeks during the summer holidays as a residential tutor.
My Approach to Tutoring
I believe that students of all abilities can benefit from tutoring tailored specifically to meet their needs. For some students the main priority will be imminent exams, with a focus on receiving a specific grade, while for others tutoring is a means through which they unlock their full potential and natural curiosity for a subject. I am proud to be able to cater to both types and all in between, tailoring my tutoring accordingly.
My teaching is therefore not just about scrupulous question-and-answer practice - my students benefit greatly from the time and stress management techniques that I developed while at Cambridge, and these can be just as, if not more, effective at improving grades as rigorous drilling in exam technique (though naturally there is a fair bit of exam technique as well!).
Fun Facts About Me
Outside of my work with Wentworth, I am a keen hockey player and long-distance runner, and for the past few summers I have spent time volunteering at a holiday camp for children and young people with learning difficulties: www.oundlemencap.co.uk.
I am also an experienced musician, with piano and 'cello Grade 8. I was a choral scholar at Christ's College Cambridge for all of my three years there and now sing with a choir in Covent Garden. When I'm not tutoring I'm studying for my Graduate Diploma in Law, as I plan to join the Bar.
My Client Testimonials
"Oliver inspired my son in a short space of time and gave him renewed confidence in his abilities. I spoke to him after Oliver left and he was extremely pleased with the lesson."
AS level chemistry
"Oliver has been a great help for my son with his Chemistry AS-Level. We found 1 hour 30 minutes slots mostly and Oliver was flexible in making the arrangements, and always pleasant and encouraging. He prepared written notes along the way, for future revision. Oliver is very professional, yet friendly in his approach. He is able to identify students' strengths, weaknesses and learning style swiftly, to advise and implement the most appropriate mode of teaching that is best tailored to the individual student. He didn't mind repeating topics a few times until my son grasped the concept. He was organized and was always prepared for each session (focusing on exam technique if required). I would strongly recommend Oliver to anyone studying Chemistry without hesitation, as my son got an A in his AS level exam!"
A level chemistry
"Oliver is very good, patient and motivating. He has really helped with my daughter's self confidence and reignite her passion for chemistry."
11+ entrance exam
"Oliver Jackson has been tutoring my 10 year old daughter twice a week for the past 6 months to prepare her for the 11+. He is extremely prepared, smart and patient, and displays a great ability to get my daughter actively involved in her tasks. Always smiling, on time, full of initiatives, he's able to keep the lesson interesting and challenging. During this past summer he came with us on holiday for three weeks and tutored my daughter for a 3 hour session every day. It was quite intense but he was able to drive my daughter's attention, successfully making her want to learn more about her subjects."
