I am a friendly, encouraging teacher with over a decade's experience, particularly with students aged 11-13. Since graduating from Cambridge 13 years ago I have taught students of all sorts of abilities and ages (5-58) anywhere from Notting Hill to Nairobi. My curiosity about the world has drawn me to journalism as well as teaching. I worked at the Telegraph for two years and now I write about arts and culture for The Economist’s 1843, The Spectator and Apollo magazines. I am also the co-author of 'What on Earth is Going On? A Crash Course in Current Affairs' (HarperCollins, 2009 - Sunday Times 'Stocking Filler of the Year'). Both my teaching and writing are informed by a desire to understand the world, and to help others do so too.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
My teaching career began at the age of 18 when I spent three months as a schoolteacher in a remote village in Nepal. While at Cambridge I taught on summer schools for Japanese university students, leading cultural trips to Bath, Edinburgh and London, and in 2007 I worked as an on-site art history lecturer in Siena and Venice. I started tutoring after university, mainly teaching 11-13 year olds across the board as well as some subjects to GCSE and A-level. I then spent an invigorating year as a full-time secondary English teacher at North London Collegiate School, which was top of the league tables at the time. Since then I have done a number of residential, weekly and homeschooling jobs in the UK and abroad. Between 2013-17 my journalism took centre stage but since going freelance last year I have taken up tutoring again, which I am thoroughly enjoying. My students have an excellent track record of entry to their chosen top UK private schools. I have successfully prepared pupils for St Paul’s, Mill Hill, Abingdon and Marlborough, among others. As a former pupil and major scholar at Radley College I have first-hand experience of the English public school system.
My Approach to Tutoring
I have brought a strong desire to inspire people to all of my teaching positions. Some of the most influential figures in my life were teachers, and they instilled in me a love of learning which I aim to pass on to my own students. Having taught a wide range of abilities and personalities, I have developed a flexible approach to teaching that can be tailored to my students' needs. I always look forward to getting to know my students and discovering the learning style that suits them best. Some thrive on competition, enjoying tests and scoring, while others fear failure, in which case I make every effort to build up their confidence gradually. I have found success by using a variety of approaches, including devising memory games, role playing and brainstorming exercises that have worked well with different students.
Fun Facts About Me
In my spare time, I like to play piano and guitar, go to the theatre, exercise and read. I have played in several bands and went on tour round the UK and US in spring 2012. I was a keen actor at university, appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe and going on two European Shakespeare tours. I love playing tennis, football and table tennis and enjoy running, swimming and chess. I speak French well and have a reasonable command of Italian and German.
