John Phipps - Private Tutor in Central London
I was educated at Westminster School and Oxford, and have worked as a private English tutor since the beginning of the 2016 academic year. My students have ranged in age from six to eighteen, studied a variety of different curricula, and all have specific needs that I strive to meet in every lesson.I continually work to pass on my great love of literature to every student I teach. I've been lucky enough to have experienced great teaching throughout my whole life; it is my passion and my privilege to pass on my love of learning.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
Over more than 200 hours of one-on-one lesson time, I have successfully helped younger pupils gain admission to the UK's top independent Schools, including Westminster School, Ampleforth and Eton, at 11+, Common Entrance and Scholarship level. Older students have successfully achieved A* grades at GCSE, AS and A-level. I have a detailed and intimate knowledge of British private education, as well as the national curriculum. I have taught ISEB, IGCSE, Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Pre-U exam boards, and have taught more than twenty set texts since I began tutoring.
My Approach to Tutoring
I realised as a young child that the students who did best were the ones who enjoyed their work the most. And so my approach is simple: identify what it is that my pupils enjoy, and try to expand their area of interest from there. Some pupils enjoy simple rules that explain exam technique; others prefer to have English linked to other disciplines, such as History, Philosophy, or even sport. Some pupils prefer medieval poetry, and some prefer non-fiction. Some pupils write stories in their spare time; some love reading but find holding a pen painful. Communication and openness are the key to my approach, and I aim for my pupils to not ust meet their goals, but to excel them.
Fun Facts About Me
I am obsessive about learning and have cultivated a broad cultural knowledge beyond the limits prescribed by curriculum. I have studied to different levels of expertise French, Russian, Italian and Spanish, as well as learning the Piano, Guitar, Harp and Xylophone. Literature is my great love and I have read extensively, but in my own time I have also pursued personal reading projects in the fields of philosophy, history and critical theory. I come from a very large and merry extended family, and have spent much of my life surrounded by cousins of all ages, and so feel more than comfortable in the company of children and teenagers.
My Client Testimonials
"Johns nurture and passion to inspire a love for literature and all-round support for the child is so wonderful, in a very short time john has completely changed my daughters connection with novels and stories, after three sessions with John my daughter came home beaming holding an award for excellence in reading and expression, she has just passed an important exam but I can honestly say John is a very invested teacher who clearly has his heart set on the journey a child has with stories and literature rather than the ticking of boxes or passing of exams-my daughter loves learning with John and we are very blessed to have found him, I honestly can't recommend him enough, a very caring and inspiring teacher and person :)"
"We took a few lessons with John during half term. My son, who is not a big fan of English, really enjoyed it. John is a very positive, patient person and easily found the way to communicate with my son. We liked the variety of tasks that were offered. Every time my son was looking forward to his next lesson. It was a great experience and we highly recommend John's tutoring."
"John is an excellent tutor: he prepares useful tasks in advance of the sessions and is very engaging during the sessions. He is friendly and explains things well. Prior to tutoring, I got a very low C in my mock, and in my final exam results I achieved an A* in one paper and an A in the other: I definitely would attribute this to John’s help."
