Oliver Jackson - Private Tutor in Central London
I recently completed my Natural Sciences degree at Christ's College Cambridge, where for my first two years I read maths, physics, and chemistry. In my final year I received the second highest First in the university in history and philosophy of science. Before Cambridge I went to Oundle School, a private boarding school in Northamptonshire.
After a stint working at the Cabinet Office I am now conducting freelance policy research. My timetable is flexible and essentially self-managed, giving me lots of time to tutor outside of my other work.
I have now been tutoring for over eight years. I primarily teach maths, physics, and chemistry at UK GCSE and A level, but have recently begun more intensive tutoring for the USA ACTs, SATs, and PSATs.
Subjects I Teach
My Education & Qualifications
University of Cambridge, 2012 – 2015
Natural Sciences (BA): 1st
School: Oundle School
One of the top private boarding schools in the country. I won the school's top academic scholarship for the 13+ and achieved 11*s at GCSE. I then studied A level Mathematics (A*), Further Mathematics (A*), History (A), Chemistry (A*) and Pre-U Physics (Distinction 1 - better than an A* at A level).
My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
Since graduating, I have been tutoring in and around London. I have tutored clients for the Westminster, St Paul's Girls, Godolphin and Latymer, Dulwich, Habs, Highgate, UCS and Stowe entrance exams, and went and lived with one client for three weeks during the summer holidays as a residential tutor.
I also tutor for maths, physics, and chemistry GCSE and A level. My clients have ranged from those aiming for a strong A* for their Oxbridge application to those working up from a D to a B. My most successful student improved his chemistry A level grade from a D to an A in the space of two months.
In 2016 and 2017 I spent time intensively preparing students for their natural sciences applications to Cambridge, as well as physics, engineering, and chemistry applications to Oxford. This requires a very different style of teaching and learning to exam cramming, focusing much more on step-wise logical thinking and analysis. Of the eight students I've tutored for these universities, five received an offer.
Most recently, I have worked with American students studying for their ACT exams. Once student raised her mark on her maths ACT from a 28 to a 34 in the space of a few weeks.
My Approach to Tutoring
I believe that students of all abilities can benefit from tutoring tailored specifically to meet their needs. For some students the main priority will be imminent exams, with a focus on receiving a specific grade, while for others tutoring is a means through which they unlock their full potential and natural curiosity for a subject. I am proud to be able to cater to both types and all in between, tailoring my tutoring accordingly.
My teaching is therefore not just about scrupulous question-and-answer practice - my students benefit greatly from the time and stress management techniques that I developed while at Cambridge, and these can be just as, if not more, effective at improving grades as rigorous drilling in exam technique.
Fun Facts About Me
Outside of my work with Wentworth, I am a keen squash player and long-distance runner, while for the past few summers I have spent time volunteering at a holiday camp for children and young people with learning difficulties: www.oundlemencap.co.uk.
I am also an experienced musician, with piano and 'cello Grade 8. I was a choral scholar at Christ's College Cambridge for all of my three years there and now sing with a choir in Covent Garden. When I'm not tutoring I'm studying for my Graduate Diploma in Law, as I plan to join the Bar.
