Oliver Rutherford - Professional Teacher in Central London
After achieving straight A*s at GCSE and A-level, I graduated from UCL with a First Class Honours Degree specialising in economics, psychology, neuroscience, French and geography.
Since then, I have focussed all of my energy on engaging with education in as many ways possible: I have become a guest lecturer at UCL (on an undergraduate course), a teacher at a secondary school in London, and an education consultant to the Times Educational Supplement (TES). I am also lucky enough to have been asked to have a role on the Board of Directors for World Education Connection, an initiative that connects thousands of students from the USA and Tanzania using technology each year.
I am currently undertaking a Master's in Education, whilst being a full-time teacher and professional musician.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
After graduating from university, I gained my professional qualification in teaching (PGCE). I currently teach maths to about 150 students at a secondary school in central London. However, for years I have helped friends and students with GCSEs, A-levels, SATs, ISEEs, and job interviews. I also have experience in tutoring macroeconomics at university level. Finally, I have experience in consulting and working in finance, and frequently help people with case interviews and applications to the city.
My Approach to Tutoring
I have a passion for teaching and learning, and leverage the research from educational neuroscience and psychology to ensure my students are achieving success. I believe that every student deserves a personalised education that is directly tailored to their own academic needs. As a result, I create detailed diagnostic questions for each student so I can understand exactly what they know and what they don’t, so that I can create personalised plans to tackle misconceptions and help students succeed.
My tutoring approach is exam-focussed: despite their starting point, all of my tutees have achieved extremely high grades (90% of my students have achieved A*s at GCSE and A-level and 100% have achieved at least an A so far). This comes as a result of me deconstructing exactly how the exam works, how to answer questions tailored to the mark scheme of each specific exam boards, and providing students with a host of memorisation techniques in order for them to excel in an exam.
Fun Facts About Me
My biggest passion outside of teaching is playing music. I play the drums and piano professionally in about 5 different bands (from grime to jazz to pop to big band), so if I'm not teaching you'll probably find me in a jazz bar in London. I have also been a qualified tennis coach for about 7 years.
I love learning new languages. I currently speak 4 languages, and Italian is next on my list.
Finally, I recently did a talk (in Spanish!) about my thoughts on education.
