English Tutoring

Why Study English?

English is the most widely used means of communication throughout the entire world, so a complete understanding of the written and spoken word is, to say the least, extremely useful in the practical world. Knowing the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation is something that will resonate throughout a students life, from writing a cover letter to employers, to writing a brief at a law firm, to even writing a simple email to family. Beyond just studying the language, studying English literature can hone in on analytical skills and provide a better understanding of the world at large – of people and their cultures, of current and historical events and their implications. A good grasp of English language and literature extends beyond just the humanities, as the sciences also need a significant amount of the skills it teaches.

Our English Tutors

English Books

Our tutors teach a variety of levels, and employ different techniques and approaches to helping our students get a whole grasp on English language and literature. The goal is to not only help students get better at the English comprehension on the standardized tests, but also to garner a greater liking and regard for literature and language on the whole. Our tutors try to implement skills that will be useful beyond the classroom as well, and that will follow our students into their university years and then their professional lives. Some of our tutors have studied English at the university level, and many have a high level of expertise in this field.

English Teaching

We teach English at all educational levels, as well as English comprehension for all of the USstandardized tests – the ACT, SAT I, SAT II, ISEE, etc. We also help students work on general reading and writing skills at any age, and homework help if needed.

11+ English | Elisa Mitrofan

" “Elisa didn't work with our son Oscar for a long period, however, she achieved great results in a short space of time. She quickly picked up where the previous tutor had laid off. She built a great rapport with him during the very first session and understood immediately why we were tutoring. Our goals were to increase confidence and encourage Oscar to challenge himself, rather than coasting through. He attends an excellent state primary, however, we just felt that some one to one attention would be a huge benefit. Elisa used Oscar's love of reading to inspire him and helped him to organise his thoughts when transferring them on to paper. She was careful not to overwhelm, but definitely hit these targets. We were always left with a sensible amount of homework and this clearly complimented the lesson that had just taken place. Elisa also suggested books that he might like to read and made the vocab tasks a lot of fun. Oscar always looked forward to his tutoring sessions, a true indication of Elisa's skills and enthusiasm! I would thoroughly recommend Elisa and can't thank her enough!” " ... See Elisa Mitrofan's tutoring profile.

I was brought up in Paris and moved to London to study at Imperial College, where I obtained a Bachelor’s and Master's degree in Theoretical Physics with High First Class honours. My research focused on the way in which alternative logic systems can help us bridge the gap between quantum mechanics and relativity. I was awarded Associateship of the Royal College of Science.

Although I am a science specialist, I also have a strong background in English and Verbal Reasoning. I sat the GRE in 2016 for entrance to US Grad School and got exceptionally good grades (Verbal Reasoning - 99th percentile, Analytical Writing - 93rd percentile).

Since 2011, I have offered private tuition for all major examination boards as well as working for the Imperial College summer schools. ...
I have taught at 3 major UK boarding schools: Eton College (current); Harrow School and St Edward's School, Oxford. I have also taught in the state sector, and therefore have experience working with students of all abilities. I have over 10 years of experience as a private tutor.

I have a degree in PPE for the University of Oxford, and a PGCE in Mathematics. I have 7 A Levels (all A grade) including Mathematics and Further Mathematics, which enables me to teach a broad range of subjects and give a balanced perspective.

My tutoring philosophy: It is essential for the student to spend as much time as possible thinking and answering questions during tutorials. A good tutor will ask the right questions at the right time to allow the student to make connections. I provide them with the necessary structure and careful prompts to guide them towards better understanding.

I am passionate about giving young people opportunities to improve. I love seeing students experience "lightbulb moments". I have taught all of my adult life in some of the best schools in the world.

I am a very keen sportsman. I have represented Wales at hockey and earned multiple Oxford Blues whilst at university. I also enjoy playing the piano to relax. ...
Prior to studying a degree in Anthropology at Cambridge (BA Hons 2:1), I went to Oakham School where I studied an eclectic mix of A-levels (History, Geography, Biology and Fine Art), and achieved top grades in all four subjects. This range of subjects, and the degree that followed, reflect my interest in people and why we behave as we do. Indeed I am continuing to pursue this interest, and am currently studying an MSc in Psychology at the University of Surrey.

Before studying at Surrey, I worked in the advertising industry (J Walter Thompson) and for a behavioural consultancy as a Project Manager. Whilst on the graduate scheme at J Walter Thompson, I won the Chrissie Barker award for Top Graduate in my year, achieved a Distinction in my IPA (Institute for Practitioners of Advertising) Foundation Award, and completed the IPA Effectiveness, and Legislation and Regulation awards. I also spent a month working and travelling in Japan, which was utterly fascinating.

Throughout my professional career I built a reputation as someone people turned to for support and I enjoyed helping develop new starters. I also have a wealth of insight when it comes to CV’s, personal statements and interview techniques – all of which are front of mind for me having just applied to university again myself. ...
Enthusiastic and experienced Oxford Economics and Management graduate, with 10 years of teaching experience and varying techniques I tailor my approach to each and every student. ...
I am a Cambridge University graduate, with experience tutoring a broad range of subjects. Before starting a career in Management Consulting, I studied Education with English and Drama (BA Hons, 1st Class), and am passionate about understanding how my students tick, finding ways of engaging them, and helping them achieve their goals.

I started tutoring at the age of 18, in Manchester where I grew up. I helped family friends through their 11+ exams, Spanish/English/Music GCSEs (As and A*s achieved). After University, I moved to Madrid for a year, where I tutored English, while studying to achieve the Instituto Cervantes DELE C1 qualification, giving me Undergraduate Degree level Spanish. ...
I am a very experienced teacher of languages and have taught students of all ages (both primary and secondary), abilities and backgrounds. I love being part of the process of enabling students to achieve their potential and have spent many years working in classrooms, one to one tutoring as well as designing the new qualifications for A level and GCSE for one of the exam boards. This has given me an excellent understanding of their requirements as well as how to prepare for success in the new qualifications. ...
I grew up in London, and was in school at Godolphin and Latymer before deciding to head to the US to attend Phillips Academy, Andover for high school. I then went on to study History of Art at Harvard University where I graduated magna cum laude with high honors. After two years working at an art gallery in New York, I returned to London where I received my Master's degree at the Courtauld Institute of Art. I have since returned to New York where I am working toward my PhD at CUNY Graduate Center.

Throughout my education I have benefitted form tutoring to help me achieve my academic goals and I understand how effective one-on-one teaching can be in preparing for big tests, catching up in a specific subject, and also building confidence. I am particularly experienced in helping students prepare for US independent and boarding school entrance examinations (ISEE, SSAT) and in working with students who need help with their personal essays or general applications for boarding school or university. As an alumni admission representative at Phillips Academy, I have worked with many students who are working on preparing applications to boarding schools and enjoy helping them to identify their strengths and use those to build a strong application. ...
I’m a first class graduate with over a thousand hours of tutoring under my belt. I grew up in London and was educated at the highly selective Graveney School in South West London before going on to read English Literature at Warwick University (most competitive course in the country) where I achieved the third highest degree in my year. I come from a family of writers - and high achievers! I achieved one of the top five marks in the country for my English Literature GCSE and I bring this standard of excellence to all my teaching.

After graduating I went on to work in schools, discovering a passion for education whilst working as both a teacher and SEN specialist in both Secondary and Primary schools. Since becoming a private tutor I have taught a range of subjects and ages and have even spent two years working as the Household Tutor for an American-Iranian family, teaching a boy from pre-school to KS2 (ages 4 to 7).

Early Years and Primary are my specialty but I teach a lot of subjects - everything up to GCSE and all Humanities up to and including undergraduate, as well as 7+, 11+, 13+ (Westminster, Harrow, Eton Pre-test) and US exams. I also am available for residential and Skype tuition. ...
A personable, articulate Cambridge graduate, who loves working with young people. I’m a natural problem solver, with a strong desire to ensure the success of my students. My strengths as a tutor involve creating a calm, non-judgemental space to learn, which I find allows students to develop their confidence and discover their talents.

At school, I combined a stellar rugby career, playing to a county standard, with academic excellence, achieving top grade A-Levels across the board, and earning a place at the University of Cambridge. I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a very solid 2.1 degree in Theology and Religious Studies in 2013. In my final year at Cambridge, I was the captain of the Clare College University Challenge team, making the quarter finals of the nationally televised competition.

My desire to teach began while I was still at school: Aged 16, I volunteered teaching English in my lunch breaks at my local primary school, and mentoring younger students at my own school who were not achieving their potential.

I have always been attracted to a wide range of challenges. After graduating from Cambridge, I began training as a secondary school RE teacher. I then pursued a career in fundraising, spending the last two years with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in London. I am now exploring training as a psychotherapist. ...
I’m a postgraduate medical student at King’s College London and Bristol University graduate with a passion for a wide range of subjects. Studying humanities to A level, focusing on crop genetics during my undergraduate degree and now working to become a doctor translates well into tutoring a varied curriculum and ensures I’ve had plenty of experience in the process of learning. I'm an enthusiastic tutor; effective tutoring raises children’s confidence and gives them skills which they can take far beyond our sessions, which is my favourite aspect of the job. ...
