At Wentworth Education we see great English teaching as the hallmark of a talented tutor. This subject, alongside Mathematics, forms the essential academic foundation of any student at any level. As such it is perhaps our most carefully cultivated department. Our English tutors are selected for their exceptional qualifications in this subject. They are Oxford and Cambridge DPhil researchers, trainee Barristers, Ivy League graduates and even heads of department from some of England’s most prestigious schools.

However, a dazzling array of academic credentials is not enough to secure a place as a top English tutor on our books. Our tutors are, first and foremost, lifelong readers. Nothing motivates a student more than the company of a teacher who radiates intellectual curiosity and a passion for reading. We select tutors who set an example in this regard and can demonstrate to students what a love of literature can do for their minds as well as their career.

Our approach to English tutoring is based around the core skills that make up most of the examination questions a student will encounter. We look at a new pupil’s reading comprehension, textual analysis, creative writing and essay technique. The broad applicability of these skills is what makes really good English tutoring so beneficial. If a student can learn to read with a sharp eye for detail, and write with insight and clarity, they will flourish in every academic discipline.
