Mark Bittlestone - Private Tutor in South London
I am a Double First Cambridge University Historian with 45 points in the IB and an experienced tutor in History, English and Maths from Year 5 upwards.
As well as delivering strong subject knowledge I am particularly keen on developing students' learning and revising techniques, such as how to write essays that tick all the boxes in the markscheme and to structure revision notes so that they map exactly how the student's brain will access information in an exam. To an extent anyone can impart content to students, so learning techniques are where I feel I deliver the most value added.
I have taught and tutored students with a range of different abilities. As well as tutoring for nearly a decade, I have worked at a school in New Zealand where all the pupils were from lower income backgrounds, and for Lanterna IB revision classes where for many students, English was not a first language, and for others there were huge gaps in their understanding of the syllabus. I am confident in tailoring learning to students of all different backgrounds and levels of confidence.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience
I have been tutoring for nearly a decade now and have worked with students across a wide ability spectrum and on everything from the 11+ entrance exams to Maths GCSE to Oxbridge Interview practice. I believe I have an engaging teaching style that challenges students, while also making it easy for me to develop a quick rapport with them. I am happy to teach English, Maths and History up to and including GCSE, History beyond that to undergraduate standard and would love to help with university preparation.
My Approach to Tutoring
I believe that tutoring should focus on the student’s needs. Instead of a ‘one size fits all’ approach, I tailor sessions to my student’s personality and learning methods. While at Cambridge University and Kings College Wimbledon, I developed strategies for revising and learning that are highly successful and efficient. As well as a complete understanding of the syllabus, I believe my real value added comes in helping my students change how, not just what, they learn.
Fun Facts About Me
I am a semi-professional stand-up and sketch comedian, and am often up and down the country and all over London performing. I also love sport and play for a Sunday league football team. I'm an avid rugby fan and was in Japan for the world cup last autumn!

International Baccaulaureate
"I know Mark as a tutor at Lanterna Education where I previously worked as Director of Operations. Mark tutored various classes with us targeted at helping International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme students revise for their final exams. Mark is very responsible and committed to always doing a great job teaching. We continuously evaluated our tutors' performances with end-of-class surveys among students and Mark consistently scored among the highest marks among our tutors. I also want to mention that he is a great person to work with and very much contributed to a good atmosphere among tutors and other staff alike. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to hire him as a tutor. Kind regards, Oscar Eriksson"
