Samuel Channon - Private Tutor in Greater London

Samuel Channon Private Tutor in Greater London

I grew up in Devon and went to a local Grammar School, where I first started tutoring whilst studying for my A-levels. I went on to study Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 2013 with an MA (1st-class) and MMATH (Merit). I was offered a place at Warwick University to study for my PhD, but ended up changing fields. I am now studying Medicine on an accelerated graduate entry program at Barts and the London School of Medicine, graduating in 2018.

Although I've ended my own career in Maths for now I have never lost my passion for the subject, and enjoy continuing this through tutoring. I've worked with students of all abilities, with the bulk of my experience tutoring Maths and Physics at A-level and GCSE standard. I also tutor Biology and Chemistry, drawing on the past two years I have spent studying Medicine. Studying Medicine has enhanced my tutoring ability, as we spend a considerable amount of time developing our communication skills.

My Tutoring & Teaching Experience

I began tutoring whilst still at school, helping friends at first but I quickly extended my client base. I started tutoring again in 2013 after graduating from Cambridge, working both privately and for a school in Devon. I moved to London in 2014 to study Medicine, and have been tutoring alongside my studies ever since.

In addition, I have also developed a mini-lecture course in University level mathematics, with the aim of attracting young students towards studying Maths at University. I have since taught this to a group of high-achieving A-level Maths students, with a number of them continuing on to study Maths at University level.

My Approach to Tutoring

My approach to learning focuses on the concept of regular self-assessment. By setting myself goals, and then regularly assessing them, I find that I learn very efficiently. This approach has served me well for over ten years, and is a method I try and use with all my students. I find this works particularly well with students who are struggling, as it allows them to regain control one bit at a time rather than tackle everything all at once.

Helping students learn more efficiently is extremely important, as it allows them to have a good work-life balance. When this doesn't exist students can start to resent their studies, which is a huge barrier to learning. It also helps in the run-up to exams, when time is scarce and prioritising becomes a vital part of success.

In addition to this, I am a big believer in exam technique. Every exam has a particular style, and this can be used to gain an advantage. Students still have to have the underlying knowledge to be able to pass their exams, but without good exam technique even bright students can struggle. I therefore spend a good amount of time asking students to think about why a question has been asked in a particular way, so they learn to use the hints that examiners are giving them.

Fun Facts About Me

I'm interested in virtually every kind of sport, from Rugby to Skiing, Golf to Parkour - you name it I've tried it. Rugby has always been my passion, and I've captained both my school team and my college team at University.
